Explore and find hotels in Brazil

With an enormous land area comes great diversity, and Brazil provides stone-cold – or rather red-hot – proof. Spanning roughly 8.5 million km², its sun-drenched landscapes range from hectic cities to hip surfer towns, powdery white-sand beaches and wild rainforest.

Rio de Janeiro is understandably the focus of most traveller itineraries. Wander the lively streets of Santa Teresa, watch the locals play football on Copacabana beach, ascend Sugarloaf Mountain to stand at the feet of Christ the Redeemer, and take in the stunning panoramic views. Later, head to the lively Lapa neighbourhood for a taste of the samba-fuelled nightlife, and dance the night away amidst the locals, affectionately known as ‘cariocas’.

After the fast pace of Rio, you may want to recharge. Ilha Grande – a verdant island peppered with unspoiled beaches – is just a couple of hours away, while surfing havens like southerly Florianópolis and Itacaré to the north require a day’s worth of travel.

With so many different environments in this huge country, there are all kinds of accommodation available, from luxury villas and beachside hotels, to funky hostels and jungle-immersed cabin lodges. Where you stay depends on the adventure you’re looking for.

Explore and find hotels in Cuba

Vintage American cars with grumbling engines, old Spanish architecture peeling with history, and all but no internet – travelling to Cuba is like stepping into a time warp.

It all starts in Havana. Spend your days people-watching on Old Havana’s lively streets, and dipping into museums and galleries filled with enthralling art. The Museo de la Revolución plunges you into the most momentous battles of The Cuban Revolution, while a walk along the Malecón – Havana’s five-mile seawall – leads to Morro Castle, a stone fortress that has guarded Havana Bay for centuries.

Beyond Havana’s reach, busy junctions give way to national parks, pristine bays and white-sand beaches. Go scuba diving and snorkelling in Playa Giron’s coral reefs to the east. Or head west for the chance to go horse riding through tobacco plantations in Parque de Viñales. Finish off with a lesson in the art of cigar rolling at one of the ranches. If there’s time, venture south to climb Pico Turquino of the southerly Sierra Maestra mountain range, and experience the electrifying city of Santiago de Cuba where the art of salsa was supposedly invented.

After a spell on the road, kick back with some well-earned beach time on the sandy cays of Varadero.

There are generally three options when it comes to accommodation in Cuba: high end hotels, renting a private apartment, or staying in Cuban homes, known as ‘casas particulares’. Hotels and private apartments are widely available in Havana, Varadero and other tourist hotspots, while casas particulares can be found throughout the country.

Explore and find hotels in Switzerland

There really is no shying away from adventure in Switzerland. Sky-high mountains, glinting glaciers, emerald lakes and epic train journeys – it’s everywhere you look, effectively making this multilingual country Europe’s prime adventure playground.

In the south, Zermatt ski resort brims with cozy chalets beneath the great hulk of 4,478-metre-high Matterhorn Mountain. Glide down the well-groomed pistes, or treat yourself to some off-piste tree runs – snow conditions here are rarely anything but perfect. Meanwhile, the frozen surface of Lake St. Moritz, to the east, plays host to unusual sports like skijoring, ice cricket and ‘White Turf’ horse racing.

Come summer, snow and ice give way to shimmering lakes and giant, green forests. It’s best appreciated in Interlaken, either from the 1,300-metre-high Harder Klum observation deck, or with a tandem paragliding experience through the valley. Alternatively, take a ride on an old-time steamboat to capture fairytale views of the fishing villages, farmhouses and hilltop fortresses either side of this central destination.

All this rural beauty combines with a variety of captivating cities: capital Bern with its medieval old town, Germanic Basel and its head-turning architecture, chic Geneva and its taste for luxury, and sprawling Zürich with its artsy edge, riverside bars and fondue restaurants.

There’s no shortage of accommodation options in Switzerland, with an abundance of hotels to choose from, plus many lodges, chalets and lakeview apartments that are available to rent throughout the country.

Explore and Find Hotels in Peru

An ancient land of sacred valleys, lost cities and countless archaeological ruins, strewn across acres of rugged mountains and steamy rainforest – Peru may well be the most complex place you’re ever likely to visit.

The story of the country’s mysterious past is pieced together though thousands of Inca ruins, intriguing museums and what is probably the world’s most revered wonder, Machu Picchu.

There are many different trails you can take to reach the astonishing ‘Lost City of The Incas’, which was only discovered in 1911 after an American explorer was led there by a local boy. You could do the world-famous Inca Trail, which includes gourmet meals, hot showers and luxury mountain lodges. Or, you could sign up to one of the cheaper, more modest treks like Lares or Salkantay, which involve an overnight stay in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes, before waking up before dawn to ascend the 300-metre-high mountain.

All tours can be arranged in the base city of Cusco, once the capital of the Inca Empire. Here you’ll find more ruins, crumbling beside grand cathedrals, and a cosmopolitan culture suited to travellers of all ages.

And that’s not the half of it. Elsewhere, you could be stepping onto the floating islands of Lake Titicaca, climbing volcanoes in Arequipa, bird-watching in Colca Canyon, trekking through the Amazon, or flying over the enigmatic Nazca Lines – huge pictograms of plants and animals etched into the southern region’s bone-dry desert.

There’s ample accommodation spread throughout Peru. The capital, Lima, is offers a wide range of hotels, hostels and apartments. This is also the case in Cusco and other coastal cities.

Explore and Find Hotels in Morocco

It may only be 20 miles from Europe, but Morocco feels a world apart. Its attractions are manifold: ancient cities, mighty mountains, dune-rolling deserts and warm, welcoming people.

Marrakech is preserved by an identity of labyrinthine medinas, bustling souks, ornate mosques, smoky hookah bars, and the all-singing-all-dancing Djemaa El Fna square. The latter has been something of a live street theatre for the best part of a millenia – today you can find musicians, acrobats, storytellers, snake charmers and slapstick comedians entertaining the crowds.

Beyond here, there’s plenty more to discover; from capital Rabat’s Kasbah of the Udayas – an oceanfront, Berber-era fort surrounded by French gardens, to Essaouira’s historic medina, with its colourful spices, leather bags and conical clay pots, all to be haggled for. Elsewhere, take in the blend of Moorish and Art Deco architecture in Casablanca, lose yourself in Chefchaouen’s dazzling blue-white-washed streets, or watch artisans at work in Fez’s sinkhole-like Chouara tanneries.

Morocco’s cities provide endless, fascinating diversions, but the valleys, deserts and gorges of the hinterland tend to leave an even greater impression. Go trekking in the rugged High Atlas Mountains, share a home-cooked tagine in a remote Berber village, or ride a camel in the Sahara – the variety of its terrains creates a dream journey.

You’ll find a wide range of hotels, apartments and friendly guesthouses in Morocco, but well worth considering are the traditional, often luxurious Riads found in most medinas. There are also laid-back hostels available in coastal towns like Agadir.
